Our History
Founded in 2002, the Inyangezi Group was born from the desire of young Burundian women who had recently arrived in Canada. Feeling homesick for their country, they spent evenings and weekends together singing and dancing to the rhythm of Burundian melodies.
What began as a shared moment between friends has become a structured group that spreads Burundian culture far beyond the community. The word "Inyangezi," which means an idyllic place in our country, a hill of rare beauty where all who visit find joy and well-being, was an obvious choice for the group's name. Songs extol the virtues of this place, which is more imaginary than real.
At the time, the group had 20 members. Since 2016, the group has experienced significant growth, with the inclusion of children as young as 4, and now boasts over 100 members of various age groups.
The group's founders were committed to sharing what they had learned and passing it on to others and future generations, including children born and/or raised in Canada. The group's objectives are to:
Promoting RUNDI cultural identity in Canada
Encourage Burundian nationals in Canada to become aware of their cultural belonging
Instilling Burundian values in the younger generations
Support and supervise various initiatives aimed at promoting Burundian culture
Contribute to the integration of Burundians into the Quebec and Canadian cultural community.
